India has set an ambitious target of achieving net zero emissions by 2070, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change. As part of this goal, the country aims to significantly increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with targets of 30% in private cars, 70% in commercial vehicles, and 80% in two and three-wheelers to be sold by 2030.
However, India is currently highly dependent on imports for the supply of Lithium, a key component on modern EV batteries. This makes the recycling of EV batteries extremely critical in reaching India's EV adoption goals.
In BharatGain's inuagural report we examine the policy and implementation gaps that hinder the establishment of a robust EV battery recycling ecosystem in India. Our objective is to analyse existing policies at both state and central levels, compare them with global best practices, and develop recommendations to address the critical need for a strong recycling policies for EV batteries.
